Look
at a book. Your eyes immediately know how to find the contents,
the introduction, the first page of the third chapter. A book's
design is intuitive and consistent, as any medium that's existed
for 500 years should be.
Other forms of visual communicationprinted or onlinemay
not have the luxury of centuries of user familiarity. In those cases,
we have to do a little more work to strike a balance between intellectual
clarity and aesthetic impact.
Good design is more than just a combination of color, typography,
imagery, and composition. It's a set of visual clues that helps
us to navigate through a maze of ideas and find our own path to
meaning.
