Excerpt from In Review (Orthopedics and Rehabilitation newsletter)

"Everything’s coming up bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments in the lab of Wan-Ju Li, PhD.

Dr. Li, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering, uses electrospinning—a technology developed in 1934 for weaving fiber into textiles—to create intricate scaffolds that mimic human collagen.

He then cultures adult stem cells in those scaffolds so they can grow into mature, functional tissue.

The goal? Some day, these custom- engineered tissues could be implanted into injured and arthritic joints, helping patients lead healthier, pain-free lives."

Excerpt from Heart and Vascular Care Overview and Accomplishments brochure

"Cardiovascular circulation is a remarkable feat of engineering and stamina. By pushing the flow of blood and oxygen through the body, evey moment of every day, it nourishes a life.

UW Health's Heart and Vascular Care program takes its cue from the circulatory system. As part of a world-class academic institution, one half of our mission is to be a destination for advanced cardiovascular care—a center where innovation and expertise converge to heal the people of Wisconsin and beyond.

But, like the second phase of a heartbeat, the other half of our mission is to push the flow of ideas, knowledge, and experience out to the community. By sharing our advancements, we nourish even more lives... for generations to come.

That's what we call the Wisconsin Idea. And at Wisconsin, circulation is our life, innovation is in our blood, and our heart is beating strong."
